Flossing has been recommended by dental professionals since 1979. So it’s no wonder why this has given dentists and patients alike quite a shock.
Flossing works just as well as it always has, and any dentist knows this to be true. The problem is that not everyone can or is willing to floss consistently and correctly so as to gain the benefits.
If Flossing Works, Why All the Fuss?
According to the Cochrane Group and an extensive review they provided showing the actual effectiveness of various flossing methods, the practice seems less effective than experts would say it is.
One of the main issues pointed out by the review is that no studies are known to back up the effectiveness of flossing against cavities. Nevertheless, according to the same review, there is evidence that flossing can help fend off gingivitis. Plaque is another issue that flossing can tackle successfully if done properly, but the review states there is weak evidence in this regard.
Dentists know that flossing is very effective, and some of these results may seem like nonsense to them. No matter how well-regulated studies such as the ones reviewed by the Cochrane Group may be, they cannot accurately depict the real efficiency of flossing, when performed correctly.
Most patients do not floss properly or don’t do it regularly, which leads to the questionable validity of the data gathered by most studies. Many people start flossing as soon as they get home from the dental office but give up in a few weeks. Others simply aren’t consistent or hurry too much. The results of these studies will never, therefore, provide an accurate enough assessment.
The fact is brushing alone isn’t enough, and we need to find a way to regularly and properly clean between our teeth, even if traditional flossing seems like a chore.
