March is National Nutrition Month and the team at Lembo-Montgomery, your Mooresville Dentist, want to use this opportunity to share the vital role nutrition plays in your oral health.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics created this annual campaign to bring attention to the importance of making wise food choices and being physically active. We want to help spread awareness along with them!
Balanced nutrition does not only keep your body healthy and functioning properly, it will also keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy as well.
Keep in mind that vitamins A and C are great for healthy teeth and gums. You can get Vitamin A from dark green, leafy vegetables (spinach and kale), orange vegetable (Oranges and carrots), egg yolks and dairy products. Vitamin C can be found in broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, citrus fruits and potatoes.
Vitamin D helps absorb calcium which help your teeth stay strong. Vitamin D is present in salmon, herring and mackerel. You can also get some Vitamin D in fortified cereals and dairy products.
Water is always a better choice for drinking over sodas, teas, coffee and even fruit juices. Always make sure your water is fluorinated which helps your teeth resist decay. Use fluoride in your toothpaste if you can as well.
Avoid or limit food that add sugar since sugar is the main culprit in tooth decay. Bacteria go crazy over sugar covered teeth! It is best to limit foods with acids as well such as: pickles, fruit juices, citrus fruits, red wine and soft drinks. Always brush your teeth as soon as possible after consuming one of these foods.
What you consume nutritionally has a huge impact on the health of your teeth. In fact, poor early nutrition can lead to a life time of issues with your teeth.
Education is your best friend! Find out what other foods can help your teeth become and remain strong and healthy.
Join us at the Health Fair on March 27th. We will have information on hand to help your be “in the know” when it comes to keeping your teeth healthy.
