Every February the dentist here at Mooresville-Dentist.com promote and celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month! Along with the American Dental Association (ADA) we strive to raise awareness of good oral hygiene.
We encourage you to learn more about your child’s dental needs.
Here’s how:
1. Your child’s teeth can start strong even while they are still growing in the womb! Provide them the nutrients to start off right by eating a good healthy diet while you are pregnant.
2. While your child is still an infant, continue to feed them healthy, nutrient meals along with the vitamins your doctor recommends. This will give their teeth a strong starting point.
3. Make an appointment with your family dentist as soon as your child has teeth. Tooth decay is one of the more common, and most preventable, disease in young children. For children between ages 2-11 a staggering 40% of them will have a cavity in their baby teeth. Amazingly 75% of children between 16-19 will have cavities in their permanent teeth. These are entirely preventable by following good oral hygiene from an early age and following the recommendations of your dentist.
4. Help your child brush thoroughly twice a day for 2 minutes until they are about 8 years old. Until then they just don’t have the physical dexterity to reach all the surfaces of their teeth to clean them properly when brushing.
5. Us a toothpaste with fluoride. Many cities have community fluoridation programs that place fluoride in the tap water.
6. Teach your child to floss along with brushing. No matter how well they brush, no toothbrush can reach into all the spaces between teeth. That is why flossing is so important; it removes and food particles or buildup before it can develop into a cavity.
7. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles for a child and replace it every 3 months.
8. Visit your dentist twice a year for cleanings. The dentist can also offer advice on brushing, flossing, toothpaste choices, toothbrush options and treatment options.
9. Have any problem spots treated as soon as possible to insure they do not become larger.
