When you are looking for a dentists to care for you and your family, there are some guidelines to follow that will help you make the right decision.

1.)    Look for a dentist that is focused on your health.

The dentist you choose shouldn’t seem to want to get you in and out quickly.  They should take time to get to know your needs, areas of pain and desires for the health of your teeth.  After talking with them, you should feel as if they want your health over your money.  A good dentist will also use x-rays to assist in the diagnosis and treatment process.  They might either take x-rays or use film from a previous dentist.

2.)    A good dentist will examine your whole mouth.

You should have your teeth, lips, gums, cheeks, palate and even the facial skin and your neck examined.  They will look for abnormal spaces, gaps as well as cavities or bite problems.  They will examine your neck for growths or enlargements on your neck.  All of their findings should be recorded and charted thoroughly.

3.)    A dentist should encourage you to get regular dental care.

While you make think your dentist is only after money when they suggest you come in every 6 months for a check-up, the truth is, a good dentist will encourage these appointments for the health of your mouth and teeth.   Going in every 6 months keeps small problems from becoming big problems.

4.) Dental work should last many years if it is done right.

Once you get dental work done, such as crowns, bridges and fillings, the work that has been done should last for many years.  Anytime a crown or a filling crumbles or breaks within a few years, you know it was done either poorly or with inferior material.  A high-priced dentist isn’t necessarily the judge of good dental work.  Rather, your dentist should focus on the work they are doing and take their time to complete it properly.

5.)    Explanations about procedures and options should be clear.

When explaining the procedures they feel are needed, your dentist should be able to explain your options clearly.  There are several ways to deal with a missing tooth and each method has its own advantages and disadvantages for instance.

Finding the right dentist shouldn’t be hard. If you follow these guidelines, you should be able to find a dentist you feel fits your needs and one you are comfortable with.
