As  summer time approaches, we often feel relaxed and start thinking of spending time on vacations, at the beach or enjoying barbeque with family and friends. Summer is the season of 3 Fs – Fun, Fashion and most importantly the Food. This is really a time of enjoyment and one should feel it to its fullest. Our body starts craving all those delicious sugary and sticky foods like ice-cream, cotton candy, chocolate, cake, soda etc. These foods may harm your oral health however if proper oral care is not maintained. But during these days we, and especially our children, often become lazy in keeping up with good dental care. You can end up with some tooth decay or gum infection that may spoil the memories of summer days if you aren’t careful. This may also ruinl our smile and also the memorable photographs. So how can we keep our smile brighter this summer without giving up our all those favorite foods and activities? You should always follow some oral care steps for teeth and gums irrespective of the type of food or drinks we are eating. Remember, visiting your dentist for regular teeth cleanings is very important to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Apart from this, here are a few tips which will keep you smiling brightly this summer!

1. Brush and floss:

We always suggest people brush their teeth at least twice daily, once on waking up and once before going to bed. This will help to get rid of the harmful bacterial growth in our mouth. You can even brush after meals especially when the food is sticky or sugary. You can also use some floss or toothpicks to remove the food particles lodged in between your teeth.

2. Don’t forget to drink your water:

Water not only keeps you hydrated on hot summer days but also takes care of your teeth. Sometimes, it can be difficult to brush after eating when we are at the beach or at a party. But if you swish some water around in your mouth it will at least help remove food particles until you can get to your toothbrush.

3. Keep your dental appointments:

It is medically recommended that everyone should get a dental check-up at least every 6 months and  should go for a dental cleaning as well. For children who are really not good at brushing yet, regular evaluations by a dentist will help prevent any cavities and provides early detection of any problems.

4. Get help at home:

Did you know that you can chew cloves or lettuce leaves to stave off harmful bacteria in your mouth?  Both have a natural antimicrobial effects. Chew a leaf or two twice a day and it can prevent bacterial growth in the mouth and keep your teeth and gums healthier.
These are all additional things we can do to keep our mouths and teeth healthy and to keep our smiles brighter. But if you feel  any symptoms of toothache or gum swelling, you should immediately visit the dentist. Use these tips to keep your teeth healthy and your smile brighter this summer and you won’t be able to stop smiling!
